Engineering discipline that deals with the chemical process for processing hydrocarbons including petroleum and natural gas, breaking down molecules of crude oil into simpler components such as methanol, benzene, plastics, lubricating oil and butane polymers. Petrochemical engineering also deals with the refining of heavy crude oil for obtaining gasoline and other light fuels used in industry and transport.

Petrochemical engineering includes the following specialization areas:

  • Petroleum refining
  • Hydrocarbon transformations
  • Petrochemical process
  • Process control and automation
  • Transport phenomena
